Route 66 Golf Tour in a convertible Mustang

DRIVE! your way across the USA

Golfing Route 66 will take you, the passionate golfer, on a road trip down memory lane, which harkens back to the classic road trip vacation where the journey was far more important than the destination.

Referred to as “The Mother Road” by John Steinbeck in his Pulitzer Prize winning novel “The Grapes of Wrath” and famous for many things including the Bobby Darren song “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” - Route 66 began as Buffalo Traces or Animal Paths that the Indians followed. It then became the route for the expansion of the nation that was to become the USA.

The Military and the Mountain Men followed the route, then the covered wagons pushed civilisation westward. The steel horse then followed as they laid down the railway tracks and finally came the motor vehicle.

It is commonly called the “Main Street of America” due to the fact that it was literally the main street for the many hundreds of towns it passed through, traversing diverse countryside from the plains & fields in Illinois, through the rolling hills of Missouri, High Plains of Oklahoma and Texas, then down into the desert areas of New Mexico and Arizona and finally to the low hot desert of the Mojave.

From sea level to heights greater than our Mount Kosciusko the driver can experience a dry desert and a Ponderosa Forest in an Alpine setting - all within 5 minutes.

With six days of relaxing Golf at some of America’s most beautiful courses, plus six days of open top driving on this famous highway, you will be escorted and guided on an amazing adventure unlike any other you’ve experienced before and certainly not commonly available on the market today.

This truly is one of the most unique and once in a lifetime golfing holidays you will ever have the chance to enjoy, and we look forward to ‘DRIVING’ (excuse the pun) with you on Route 66.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Departing home in Australia Saturday 16th October

Saturday, 16th October
Hotel:  Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas with breakfast

Welcome to the house that fame built. Hip, modern, decidedly dramatic, and the centerpiece of the Las Vegas Strip, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino is more than the newest hotel in town. It's the shopping, dining and gambling destination of choice for the city that celebrates celebrity.

Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino has all the action you can handle with three acres of gaming, a variety of tables and slots, a huge poker room, The Playing Field race and sports book, and the scintillating Pleasure Pit, with beautiful women dealing blackjack, clad in sensual lingerie, while go-go dancers cavort overhead.

You can dine at one of eight extraordinary and already famous restaurants, including Koi from Los Angeles and Strip House from New York. Catch "Peepshow" in our 1,500-seat Showroom. Splurge at Miracle Mile Shops with 170 stores and boutiques. Rejuvenate at the Planet Hollywood Spa by Mandara. And luxuriate in one of our 2,500 plush and stylish rooms and suites — each one with its own piece of Hollywood history — actual memorabilia from famous films.

Las Vegas -  This city has something for everyone, some of the best shopping in the world, and world class shows as well. Although gambling surrounds you, this is far more than just a casino destination. With signature restaurants, this is also a food lovers delight. This town really does embrace its Route 66 heritage with lots of great neon and fabulous eateries taking you back to the heyday. This is also said to be the gateway to the Grand Canyon and is the home of the Grand Canyon Railway. It has some wonderful shops located in the main street for those that love shopping.

Golf:   18 holes at the Elephant Rocks Golf Club

In the shadow of Bill Williams Mountain, Elephant Rocks at Williams is the perfect escape from the summer heat of the Valley.  Nestled at 7000 feet above sea level, the course meanders its way through stands of large Ponderosa pines. There has been a course here since the 1920's but it was not until 1990, when the course was reconfigured by Gary Panks, that  its reputation grew.  In 2000, Gary designed a further nine holes to make it a true championship challenge.

Non- Golfer -  For the non-golfers this tiny town offers some great shopping along with a great day out to the Grand Canyon via the Grand Canyon Railway.

Friday, 22nd October
Drive:   Travel via the Grand Canyon to Sedona, AZ (190 miles – 5 hours plus stops)
Hotel:  The Sedona Rouge Hotel and Spa, Sedona, AZ with breakfast

The picturesque city of Sedona, Arizona, often called “Red Rock Country,” is home to the renowned Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa. The area surrounding the hotel is abundant with all conveniences of an urban setting, while also located only one mile from the Thunder Mountain trailhead, the entrance to Red Rock Country and hundreds of acres of Coconino National Forest, renowned as a four season’s playground.

The Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa is unique in its authentic Mediterranean design, boldly merging all the colors of its dramatic setting into a seamless blend of Andalusian luxury. Its Mediterranean design style is unlike any other hotel in Sedona Arizona.

Sedona -  This is one of the most picturesque towns in the USA with jaw dropping beauty. It is an arty town with loads of gallery’s to enjoy. Shops and restaurants line the streets but it is the geography that simply astounds the eye. Trust me, this may well become your favorite little town in the USA if not the world.

Saturday, 23rd October

Golf:  18 Holes At The Sedona Golf Resort

No other Sedona golf course provides a better combination of jaw-dropping splendor and exceptional challenge than the acclaimed Sedona Golf Resort. Winding around the famed red rocks of Sedona, each hole provides a unique adventure. No wonder this championship Sedona golf course receives a continuous four-star rating from Golf Digest.

Sunday, 24th October
Drive:  Route 66 to Winslow, AZ (90 miles – 2 hours plus stops)
Hotel:  1 night in the La Posada Hotel with breakfast

Highlight Dinner: Tonight we enjoy the amazing Turquoise Room for a special dinner.

Discover Arizona’s Grandest Estate ~ A National Historic Landmark, the La Posada Hotel, the “last great railroad hotel,” offers a unique cultural experience for Southwest travellers. Built in 1929 for the Santa Fe Railway, La Posada is truly one of America’s treasures. La Posada’s story weaves together two extraordinary visions. It begins with Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter and Fred Harvey, who hired Colter to design the hotel. It embodied her vision, from its architecture down to its finely crafted details. But La Posada closed in 1957; for the next 40 years, its future remained tenuous. Enter Allan Affeldt and his wife Tina Mion. Affeldt heard about the hotel and purchased it in 1997 after much negotiation, bringing with him a strong vision and commitment for returning La Posada to Colter’s original concept. Restoration started immediately and continues today, thanks to Affeldt’s efforts and the support of local preservationists, hotel guests, and a talented team of artisans and craftsmen.

Considered by many to be the finest restaurant in the Four Corners region, the Turquoise Room opened in 2000 under the direction of renowned Chef John Sharpe, who oversees every detail of the preparation and service.

Winslow -  A small Route 66 town made famous by the Beach Boys song Take It Easy. Yes you will get the chance to do just as the song says. “Sandin on the Corner of Winslow Arizona” is a must and the shops that surround will help you spend some money on souvenirs. It is a wonderful little railway town and with an average of 90 trains passing per day, so it is a good thing we are staying in a purpose built railway hotel.

Monday, 25th October
Drive:  Route 66 to Gallup, NM (156 miles – 3 hours plus stops)
Hotel:  1 night at the El Rancho Hotel with breakfast

The Charm of Yesterday, The Convenience of Tomorrow. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the El Rancho Hotel exudes the charm and wonder of the Old West. The El Rancho Hotel has been the home for numerous Movie Stars while filming in the area including John Wayne, Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Errol Flynn, Kirk Douglas, Gregory Peck, Humphrey Bogart and numerous others. In addition to Movie Stars, numerous Political Figures have stayed at the El Rancho including two Presidents: President Reagan and President Eisenhower.

Gallup -  Not the most amazing town in the world but a must stop when it comes to travelling Route 66. The reason is the historic El Rancho Hotel and the movie making history of its previous guests. On top of that the wonderful food you get to enjoy from the in house restaurant and the ambiance of the 49ers bar. Shopping for Indian Arts and Crafts is best done here at the Hotel.
