The Joys of Travelling With Kids

Have you been dreaming about taking a holiday but the thought of sitting on a plane with the kids for hours on end makes your hair stand on end?!?!  I know I have!

Even after 9 years of having two very boisterous boys around, I really have to work on my husband to agree to go anywhere with our kids, who’s monkey like behaviour proves Darwin’s Theory of Evolution!  I even resorted to suggesting I would take the kids on a different flight and we’d meet him at our destination.

That was until I came up with a list of solutions for a harmonious holiday!

1.      ACCEPT THAT THEY ARE KIDS: Once I got my head around the fact that a 5 year old boy is not going to miraculously behave like a responsible young man, I actually felt more relaxed.  Fortunately, we only ever travel with kids during school holidays, and there are usually lots of other kids on the flight.

2.      KEEP THEM BUSY: Find out what they like that will keep them entertained.  The colouring in books and pencils the airlines give kids on a plane do absolutely NOTHING for my boys.  My life changed radically however when we bought DS Lites.

3.      ALLOW THEM TO INVESTIGATE: On their first flight (2 hours) the boys went to the toilet 4 times.  It was a novelty, and providing they didn’t interrupt the flight attendants during their service, they were no bother.

4.      TAKE THEIR PILLOWS: Especially on long trips, and don’t forget their favourite bear so they feel relaxed to go to sleep, both in the plane and in the hotel.

5.      TAKE THEIR FAVOURITE SNACK: My over-indulged children (Yes, I accept full responsibility) are fussy eaters.  Rather than worry about them eating the food on offer, I take some of their favourite snacks along.

6.      INCLUDE ACTIVITIES THEY WILL ENJOY: It is completely irrational to expect a child to go from Museums to Art Galleries, etc, without having a chance to blow off some steam, run around or visit an attraction that interests them.  Balance the adult and child activities so everyone gets to do something they like.  I had friends in the US who visited Chicago for a weekend, and their kids got around the City on Razor Scooters and had a blast.

7.      STAY AT CHILD FRIENDLY PLACES: The best family holiday we had was at a Family Resort with an all-inclusive package, including open bar –kid’s club every day with lots of variety for the boys, and golf, tennis, swimming and relaxing for us.  Everyone was happy!

As a Licensed Travel Agency with experienced Consultants, we have access to a huge range of travel products specifically designed for the family market.  You can relax in the knowledge your holiday has been booked by an Industry Professional, and concentrate on enjoying your adventure with your children.  Remember, they won’t be kids forever, and one day you’ll be asking, “Why don’t the kids want to come on holidays with us anymore?”  Enjoy them while you can.

Happy travels!
